Zinc is important for a healthy immune system, properly synthesizing DNA, healthy growth during childhood and healing wounds.

Zinc (Zn) is an important antioxidant
that can help reduce damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that form in the body with an odd, unpaired electron. Free radicals are very unstable and react quickly with other compounds, trying to capture the needed electron to gain stability.

Some free radicals arise normally during metabolism. However, environmental factors such as pollution, radiation, smoke and herbicides can also spawn free radicals.

A Cochrane review concluded that taking Zinc is beneficial in reducing the duration and severity of the common cold in healthy people, when taken within 24 hours of onset of symptoms.

Zinc was found to shorten the duration of common cold episodes, by up to 40% in a recent study.

in plasma and body tissues. Even in small amounts, Vitamin C can protect the body from damage by free radicals and exposure to toxins and pollutants. When people do not have enough Vitamin C, they can suffer from fatigue and difficulty with wound healing.

Research also suggests that Vitamin C is involved in the digestion of cholesterol, therefore having enough Vitamin C may impact blood cholesterol levels as well as the incidence of gallstones. Vitamin C also helps the body get iron from the foods we eat by aiding the absorption of iron in the intestine.
